C-Gel, also known as HF antidote gel, is a topical gel containing 2.5% calcium gluconate. It is used in the first aid treatment of those exposed to hydrofluoric acid. Contact with hydrofluoric acid on the skin can be extremely dangerous and have lifelong effects. The immediate application of HF antidote gel to a chemical burn site can considerably reduce bone and deep tissue damage. It is imperative that all workplaces that require employees to come into contact with hydrofluoric acid have calcium gluconate gel readily available in the case of an accident.
Calcium gluconate gel, or HF antidote gel, works by chemically reacting with hydrofluoric acid to form insoluble calcium fluoride. This prevents the hydrofluoric acid from extracting calcium from the body tissues and bones of an individual suffering a chemical burn. Without this, they can suffer from deep tissue and bone damage, and even in extreme cases, cardiac arrest. Please note that all hydrofluoric acid burns require full medical evaluation, even when treated with calcium gluconate gel during first aid.
This HF antidote gel is supplied in a 500g tub. This 500g tub is best suited to workplace first aid kits and to also be kept in each room where employees may come into contact with the acid. This is particularly important due to the delayed onset of symptoms following exposure with diluted hydrofluoric acid. Severe pain may be experienced hours later when the damage has already occurred. This is why it is so important to treat those exposed to hydrofluoric acid with calcium gluconate gel, whether they are in pain or not.
